How to Write Compellingly About Any Product (No Matter How Dull)

Have you ever been tasked with writing about a product that’s as exciting as watching paint dry? Or maybe you've had to describe something with the pizzazz of a beige carpet. Don’t fret! Today, we’re diving into the exciting world of making any product sound like the next big thing since sliced bread (which, by the way, was pretty groundbreaking back in the day). So, grab your favorite writing device, put on your snazziest thinking cap, and let’s get cracking!

Tell a Story

People don’t buy products; they buy stories. So, if you’re writing about a business that sells paperclips, don’t just tell me they hold papers together. Transport me to an office where chaos reigns supreme, but lo and behold, the mighty paperclip saves the day by keeping all important documents in check. Suddenly, those paperclips seem pretty darn essential, huh?

Relatability is Key

Tie your product to everyday experiences. Does your product help solve a problem? Even if it’s a minor one, like the heartbreak of finding a lone sock after laundry day? (Sock organizers, anyone?) Making your product relatable makes it memorable.

Don’t Skimp on Descriptions

“It’s a sponge,” they said. Oh, honey, it’s not just any sponge. It’s a marvel of absorbency, a veritable thirst quencher of spills, the unsung hero of clean kitchens everywhere. See what we did there? Amp up your adjectives!

What’s the Quirk? No matter how mundane a product might seem, there’s always something unique about it. Maybe those kitchen knives you're writing about were designed based on ancient samurai swords. Maybe that pillow integrates NASA-designed foam technology. Find the quirk and play it up!

Talk to the Product (Yes, Really!)

This might sound loony, but bear with me. If that mop in your hand could talk, what would it say? Perhaps it'd brag about its superior dirt-lifting skills or its ergonomic design or in the case of a railing manufacturer, they might not how safe they keep customers in-store. Engage in this playful exercise, and you’ll have content in no time.

Benefits, Benefits, Benefits

It’s not about what your product is; it’s about what it can do. That anti-snore pillow isn’t just fluffy; it promises peaceful nights. The humble doorstop doesn’t just prop doors open; it ensures that summer breeze flows through your home. Focus on the benefits, and you'll capture your reader's interest.

Include Testimonials

Mary from Wisconsin says the egg slicer you’re selling changed her salad game. Bob from Florida believes the eco-friendly shoe insoles made him feel like he’s walking on clouds (and saving the Earth!). Real stories from real people add credibility and a dash of human touch.

Engagement tip: create a post using humorous or quirky imagery to pose a question. Using this image above for example, ask your audience “what would your tickets say?” Image Credit: Shamblen Studios

Make it Interactive

Encourage reader engagement. Pose questions, host a fun poll, or create a hashtag challenge. Make your readers feel they’re a part of a community, all thanks to that “dull” product you’re writing about.

End with a Bang

Your closing lines should be as memorable as your opening ones. Wrap up with a powerful call to action, a quirky sign-off, or a promise of what this product will bring into the reader’s life.

In essence, every product, no matter how bland it seems, has a tale to tell. As business owners and bloggers, it's our job to be the storytellers. The world needs to know about the unsung heroes of our daily lives, whether it's a spatula, a post-it note, or yes, even a beige carpet. So next time you're staring down a product that's as riveting as a bowl of plain oatmeal, remember: you've got the spices to make it zesty. Happy blogging!
